To resolve or not to resolve ... that is the question!
If you are anything like us, you have mixed feelings about New Year's resolutions. Some believe it is to solve a problem from the past, which could be true, but it is also just making a decision, and sticking to it.

This year, instead of making deep resolutions, we decided that we are going to pick a theme that describes our intentions for 2019.
For Jeannine, it's all about 'connect' and 'reconnect'. Julia's focus for all things in 2019 is 'show up'.
Connect
I am keeping it simple. Stephen and I love to have dinner parties. He likes to cook, and I sure like to decorate a table. Even better, we are a good team. Our 2019 goal is to host a monthly dinner party. We will work on it together from the menu selection, wine pairing, to the table linens (okay, he doesn't really care about this, but he will help because it's important to me).
We are going to throw in a little twist to ensure that our table is filled with friends, old and new, interesting conversations, and most importantly plenty of laughs.
Fill out sheets of paper with our friends names, fold them up, and throw into a bowl.
Each month, pick out 2 - 3 names to invite.
Some months, pick out only two, ask each of those guests to invite another guest that the rest of us have never met.
Some months, don't share with all of the guests who will be attending. It will be a surprise to all when they arrive.
Ask guests for their favorite meal or food. This will help your guests to feel that you really put in the effort for them.

Show Up
Life is short and you only get one so you might as well show up for it! When considering my 2019 theme I kept coming back to this idea. My theme is less concrete than Jeannine's so my plan is to apply the concept of showing up when making decisions about what will serve me and my family in the upcoming year.
For example, when opportunities and adventures come my way my plan is to show up! Sometimes it is easy to talk yourself out of doing something new or different but almost every time you actually do it you are glad you did.
For me it's about filling my year with memories and using the precious time we are given to its fullest. This doesn't mean saying yes to everything, it means picking and choosing how to spend my time most wisely.
In addition to my overall theme, I have several specific and measurable goals. Here are a few of them:
Travel somewhere new.
Keep up my exercise routine.
Read at least 10 books (I read 14 last year...can I beat it).
Review and evaluate our financial health and planning.
Go to all doctor and dentist appointments.
Use all my volunteer hours at work (we get 16 hours each year).
There you have it. New Year's resolutions don't have to be quite so flighty, or involve gyms and special diets. They can help you become a better friend, and continue learning, improving and trying new things, no matter where you are in your life.
